Bimbombey - Bimbombey

Tuula-Anneli Rantanen (see earlier entry)  recorded "Bimbombey" in 1959. It was released on the B-side of her successful single "Unhoita menneet". The original "Bimbombey" was performed by American singer Jimmie Rodgers (b. James Frederick Rodgers).  He is not related to the famous country singer of the same name. Jimmie is best known for his hit "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" .

Passion Flower - Kaipuun kukka

Tuula Ikäheimo recorded "Kaipuun kukka" (Flower of yearning) in 1959 meeting with quite big success with it. Tuula had a short recoding career in 1958-1961 comprising only of 9 songs This "Kaipuun kukka" was the most popular. The original melody was based on Beethoven's famous "Für Elise". The schlager version "Passion Flower" was first made popular in 1957 by an American vocal group called The Fraternity Brothers. On this recording they were featuring Gil Fields (real name Gilbert Garfield), who was a member of another vocal group The Cheers and who also was co-writer of the song. It was a big hit in Europe in German version "Rote Rosen werden blüh'n" (Red roses will bloom) performed by Caterina Valente. This version was undoubtedly also the inspiration for Tuula's Finnish version. But let's hear Caterina perform the song in somewhat rarer French language interpretation.

The Tunnel Of Love - Karuselli vie

Raija Mannerla is another songstress I unfortunately don't know anything about. She recorded 9 songs in two years, most actively in 1959. This "Karuselli vie" (Riding on a carousel) was one of those 1959 recordings. Even if those times were the golden years of Finnish female artists, Raija's records did not sell, and perhaps that's why she quit recording at early stage. The original song "The Tunnel Of Love" was on the film soundtrack of a 1958 romantic comedy of the same name. The starlet of the flick was Doris Day (co-starring Richard Widmark), who also sang this title tune. It's played in the background of the opening credits of the film. You can see it here.
